Mike Dehnert also known as label head of Fachwerk and an artist on Delsin, Deeply Rooted and Echocord is back with his 4th release on the Clone Basement Series. “Echo 8” It will be out on February 23.
"Starting his career in 2007, Mike Dehnert has proved himself as tireless in creating a library of high-quality techno. Perhaps one of Dehnert’s most notable excursions has been through Fachwerk and its sublabels Colombage and MD2 that have made massive contributions to the Berlin club scene. Dehnert himself has produced a staggering ten albums over an eight-year career. This puts even the most ardent techno toilers to shame. His latest EP features as his fourth instalment in the legendary ‘Close Basement Series’, and has Dehnert at his brilliant best.

‘Echo 8’ begins with a shameless confidence. The central motif presents itself immediately, and has an instant catchiness that is impossible to ignore. There are what sound like tuned, metallic thuds, and sharp swipes of hi-hats that slash away at the stereo-field. Yet, to conceive of this track as at all icy would be a mistake. Rather, there is an undeniable sexiness that surrounds it. This marriage of bold elements with subtle shifts defines Dehnert’s sound. It’s perfect for peak-time dance-floor filling. Following on from this, warbling vocals meander through ‘Wokabeat’. Here, the percussive thwacks hit in all directions, in a way almost disjointed yet held together in peculiar cohesion. By the end, the percussion has reached its absolute limit. All that remain are the murky voices bent out of recognition.
The B-side opens with an unmistakable fierceness. On ‘Meckwiki’, fuzzy squarewaves underpin a pounding groove, a throwback to the ‘hands in the air’ heyday of early rave. Here, Dehnert showcases his ability to play with powerful dynamic shifts. At its peak, this track reaches almost unbearable levels of tension. But before you can catch your breath, the elements have dispersed away into clear and distinct parts. A brave track from Dehnert, but it works brilliantly. The EP closes with off-kilter shuffle of bumps and clicks. What is perhaps most intriguing about this track lies in its rhythm. Beyond the hard drum-machine patterns that ground it, there are strange and infectious stabs that keep just behind the beat. These never seem to ‘fit’ into the right place, but create an enormous amount of rhythmic intrigue throughout. It’s this ability to create groove in unexpected ways that makes this EP what it is. Dehnert keeps the listener coming back for more and more."
